For this week we were in Phuket for field studies. We had a very special task which was going up against BIS in a drama competition. When our drama group went up against the BIS students in an improv session, we had to think of place. As we all knew our audience; the rest of 9th grade are really childish and like silly humor. As my peers and I did, we used stupid humor that everyone liked to create an atmosphere that everyone enjoyed. But we couldn’t go all in with this humor because there were of course teachers there that were judging us, but laughter is contagious, which we used to our advantage. By making the students laugh, the teachers laughed as well improving our score. Reality TV shows also do this by adding a laugh track each time a joke occurs, making you also laugh or enjoy it more.
Moving on to Space, which is more of the physical environment and you. Let’s say you’re on a small stage and you have to do something silly. You create a weird pose and say something out loud. That is using your space, making the stage smaller and echoing you, making the audience more intrigued to what you have to offer. My peers and I also used this to our advantage to make our audience even more interested and felt like they were almost involved. That is the beauty of drama. And that was basically what Place and Space is and how we used this. We did very well but there is always room for improvement.
